Shortboard |
|
|
Good for fast steep waves in
the 3 - 8 feet range. This is the best board for waves in the
sebastian inlet area, and other areas with shallow sandbars.
Too much work if the waves are under 3 feet cause the board
lacks buoyancy. Most shortboards differ in the type of tail,
how much rocker, and the board thickness. Square and squash
tail shapes usually give the board more snappy turns, whereas
a rounded pintail yields more drawn out turns. Generally, boards
with a squash or square tail are better for small peaky waves,
and the rounded pin is better for bigger and/or hollow waves.

Funboard |
|
|
This board ranges in overall
shape. Sometimes taking the shape of hybrid between a shortboard
and a longboard with a somewhat rounded nose, and sometimes
taking the shape of a short longboard (sometimes called a Mini
Malibu) having a very rounded nose and tail. As its name implies,
it is very fun in all conditions and combines the benefits of
a longboard (quick paddling and fast even on small waves) with
the benefits of a shortboard (manuerability and easy duck diving).

Fish |
|
|
Ideal for waves
between 2-5 foot. It's only draw back is that when the waves
get over 5 feet and more hollow then the board has a tendency
to slide-out a bit (it doesn't hold a good line). These boards
are short, but wide and thick. Their width gives the board a
good turning arc, and the thickness gives the board extra buoyancy
to keep speed on small mush-burgers. Cutbacks and off the tops
are easy and yield a curved arc rather than a snap. Fish boards
usually have a swallow tail to allow for enhanced maneurability.
They sometimes have a rounded nose for extra buoyancy (volume).

Gun |
|
|
Certainly the best board
on large days. Guns range in size from 7 feet to over 12 feet.
Size of the board chosen depends on the wave size. Guns have
the shape of a shortboard (pointed nose and narrow), but are
very long and usually have a pintail. Usually ridden in waves
8 feet and larger. A must for very large waves.

Longboard |
|
|
Last but not least, the
longboard is one of the funnest surfboards in small to midsize
waves. Easy to paddle, easy to catch waves, and very fast on
small waves. Usually ridden in waves 1' to 6', and sometimes
larger (experts only). If you've never ridden a longboard, you
don't know what your missing. Turning a longboard is very different
than turning on a shortboard because it is a more gradual process.
Also, it is easier to 'catch a rail' (and plunder) on a longboard.
